Arrowing a Propane Tank with a DirtNap Gear Broadhead

Sure it’s safe…that’s why we’re standing behind this barn while we shoot a propane tank.

Due to the potential explosive nature of the January “Will it Kill it?” segment of The Thinking Woodsman Podcast, we decided to relocate the Back Yard Bow Range to someplace a little more remote. Watch what happens when I shoot a propane tank with a DirtNap Gear DRT broadhead from 20 yards out of my Mathews No Cam HTX, courtesy of Select Archery.

Talk about inducing target panic!

On these segments, I usually try to find junker arrows to shoot since they take such a beating. The result is that not every arrow flies exactly the same. My first shot struck low, embedding into the plywood casing on the target. The second shot hit the tank, but was still low and glanced downwards only denting the cylinder. The third shot, well, we all know what happened there.

Spooky is probably the best word used to describe the walk up. The area smelled of gas, meaning it was still in the atmosphere and potentially concentrated enough to ignite, so we approached with caution. Upon final inspection, the DRT blew through both walls of the canister and was in great shape. We had one more propane tank on hand and thought about lighting a candle near it and taking another shot, but felt like we ought to quit while we were ahead.

While there was no cool fiery MacGyver ‘splosion, there was an explosion nonetheless…and that’s what we came for.
